Day of Mourning, April 28

Today is the Day of Mourning for workers who were killed or injured in workplace accidents. I said a few words at a couple of events butI would be very happy if I never had to attend another because workplace accidents had become obsolete.
"When a worker dies or is injured on the job there is more than just one heartbeat that stops, skips a beat or pounds. One worker down also means a motherless family, a generation growing up fatherless, a community that has lost a voice and volunteer. Friends lose half of the past they shared with the person lost,' says Ontario Federation of Labour president Wayne Samuelson."- more

New York Street Advertising Takeover

New York Street Advertising Takeover" Brings Art to Over 120 Illegal Billboards in NYC:
NYSAT was organized as a reaction to the hundreds of billboards that are not registered with the city, and therefore are illegal. While illegal, these violations are not being prosecuted by the City of New York, allowing the billboard companies to garner huge profits by cluttering our outdoor space with intrusive and ugly ads.

On This Day - April 26, 1959

Recently, as a representative of the local MP, I attended the annual Top Hat Ceremony in Thorold to celebrate the annual re- opening of the Welland Canal. The 50th Anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway was also being celebrated. That's a significant milestone, I thought to myself, the Seaway is pretty old. Then, as if hit by a lightning bolt, a repressed memory reared it's ugly head. I remembered attending the opening ceremony of the opening of the Seaway in Caughnawaga, Quebec. I was in my father's arms and my parents encouraged me to wave to Queen Elizabeth II as she sailed by on the Royal Yacht Britannia. I'm older than the frickin' Seaway. Waah! Anyhow, if you're interested in ships and locks and engineering marvels and whatnot check out the video at the CBC Archives.

So long Bea.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.

Here she is playing Cher to Estelle Getty's Sonny. She was one funny broad.

Tilt-Shift Mardi Gras

Keith Loutit Makes A Beautiful Tilt-Shift Film of Mardi Gras

As a dog returns to its vomit...

I just hoovered up another piece of the chocolate pecan pie a friend gave us yesterday. It was sweet and decadent as only Willow can make it. Ordinarily I'd suck it up without guilt but yesterday I attended a work related 5 course Italian lunch followed by a substantial barbecued chicken dinner made by a well intentioned Mr. Nag (who had not had a gut stretching lunch) followed by the aforementioned pie. Today I had a banana for lunch in an attempt to ameliorate yesterday's pig out but once I got home I heard the siren song of the pie and that was that. I'm thinking screw the diet and buy Spanx. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Tales From The Vault

The War Exchange Conservation Act was designed to preserve Canada's balance of trade with the United States and banned the import of a broad range of nonessential items from the U.S., including such luxury items and diversions as cocoa paste, champagne and pictoral postcards. It also targeted what had become for many people not a luxury, but an essential distraction from the harsh realities of everyday life: the pulps.

Detectives. Sex. Westerns. Confession stories. These were topics that sold magazines, and Canadian publishers knew it. People would still want their weekly fix of grisly murder, winking pin-up girls, thundering hooves and vicarious heartbreak; if the Americans could no longer supply it, someone else would have to.

Canadian Pulp Fiction, 1940-1952 is a great site, full of information and nice design too.

Grueling Guinea Pig Games of the 2009 Olympics have started with an amazing opening as rascally rodents display their dedication to their chosen sports. In the struggle for survival, only the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals with their stamina, prowess, and incredible feats to win gold, silver, and bronze medals.

San Francisco Studio Apartment Gets 15 Miles Per Gallon
There's no denying it: Crockett Bodelson and Sandra Wang's studio apartment is as cute as a bug's ear -- albeit not much larger than one. It's well-lit, was almost entirely stocked via freebies on Craigslist (including an upright piano), and is decorated with the couple's own artwork. Just make sure not to park it in a red zone and you're golden.

The 16-Year-Old Gloria Vanderbilt Invites You Up to Her Room

Ms. Vanderbilt was asked why, given carte blanche with the décor of her room, she had chosen to recreate the bedroom of her adolescence. She made a face that conveyed, as politely as possible, the words: “Well, duh.”

“There was never any question for me,” she said. “Because how could you ever find another room like this?” Read more at NYTimes.com

Child Labour in Bangladesh

G.M.B. Akash takes photos of children who live and work in abysmal conditions in Bangladesh:
Child labor has been forbidden in Bangladesh since 1992. In December 2005 I visited a garment factory in Narayanganj, which is the center of the garment industry in Bangladesh. I took a picture of the owner beating a 12-year-old boy because he had been too slow sewing t-shirts.

According to the U.N. Children’s Fund report, more than 6.3 million children under 14 are working in Bangladesh. Many of them work under very poor conditions; some of them even risk their life. Factory owners pay them about 400 to 700 taka (10 USD) a month, while an adult worker earns up to 5,000 taka per month.
