Henri 2, Paw de Deux

In 2008 I blogged about this pauvre petit chat. Alas Henri is still consumed with ennui.

Secret Agent Cat

I wonder if Joyce would like to pursue this career.

Acoustic Kitty was a CIA project launched by the Directorate of Science & Technology in the 1960s attempting to use cats in spy missions, intended to spy on the Kremlin, and Soviet embassies. A battery and a microphone were implanted into a cat and an antenna into its tail. This would allow the cats to innocuously record and transmit sound from its surroundings.

LONCats: The Top 10 Cats Of London

These are the cats I have seen in London:

The most photographed cats in London have to be the four Trafalgar Square lions, sculpted by Edwin Landseer and unveiled in 1867. Climbing all over the lions is an ages-old London tradition for children, a potentially dangerous activity that patrolling wardens happily turn a blind eye to. Another proud beast guards the eastern end of Westminster Bridge. Made of Coade stone, the felid once topped the long-demolished Red Lion Brewery. After a sojourn to Waterloo station, the lion was erected next to County Hall in 1966.
Tipu’s Tiger, one of the V&A’s most famous, and unusual, exhibits. The bizarre sculpture dates from around 1793, and shows a life-size tiger mauling a fallen European. Still odder, the piece conceals a mechanical pipe organ that simulates the cries of the unfortunate man and the growls of the tiger.

Mummified cats at the British Museum. A mummified cat once graced the upstairs bar of the now defunct Tiger Tavern (but, then again, it also reckons Elizabeth II was imprisoned in the Tower). Sir John Soane’s Museum definitely contains two mummified cats. Finally, a mummified cat was discovered in 1949 inside the church of St Michael Paternoster in the City…burial place of Dick Whittington.

Bob The Angel Tube Cat

Mr. Nag and I saw Bob, the ginger cat, and James near Covent Garden when we were in London. I had no idea they were famous and just discovered that Bob's biography has been published. The pair are doing a pawing/signing at Islington Waterstones tonight. Sweet.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I also rubbed shoulders with another famous feline, Pollock the blogging cat, when I was in Paris a few years ago.

Louis vs. Rick

Louis vs. Rick is a cautionary tale about the perils of teaching a feline to instant message. The exchanges between the two are hilarious, like this one where Louis is jealous of Rick's girlfriend:

  • --------: 2:07 PM
  • LouisTheCat: im not angry
  • RickDickens77: Then what's with the silent treatment?
  • LouisTheCat: i mean im not angry anymore
  • RickDickens77: So tell me why you've been angry, at least. Is it Emily?
  • LouisTheCat: she was in my spot
  • RickDickens77: So it's about her spending the night.
  • LouisTheCat: thats my spot
  • LouisTheCat: i dont know why you would just let some tramp lay in my spot
  •   RickDickens77: She's not a tramp, she's very special.
  • LouisTheCat: special tramp
  • LouisTheCat: so you mean whore
          • I'm convinced. I shall not teach Joyce to instant message no matter how loud she miaows

10 Reasons I Am Better Than My Cats

Is your cat giving you an inferiority complex? Think about it for a minute... humans rule.

        • I have opposable thumbs, and can therefore do amazing things like open doors and prepare my own food.

        • I don’t lick my butt.

        • I don’t lick my sister’s butt.

        • I have a whole blog about them. They don’t even know how to type.

        • I have never scarfed my dinner down, puked it all up, and then eaten the puke.

        • I have never missed the toilet.

Gatos salvajes del Parque del Retiro

Madrid's beautiful Retiro Park is home to a number of very healthy looking stray cats. One evening last week I saw an older couple arrive with a bundle buggy of cat food. The cats were expecting them and ran over to be fed.

As we wandered on I saw this beautiful kitten by the side of the path (I admit I wanted to take it home).

When I looked up I saw a lot of kitten activity in a tree. One curious kitten was climbing down while the black one had been on the ground but was frightened and was trying to retreat to his home in the tree. Two others were watching from the safety of their "cat nest".

It looks like these guys will be ready to join the adults at the cat food buffet before too long.

Auditions for a black cat, 1961

Photograph by Ralph Crane, LIFE archive
It is thought that that this audition may have been for director Roger Corman’s Tales of Terror (1962), film adaptations of a trio of Edgar Allen Poe stories including “The Black Cat.”

        Meet Etti-Cat, the 1960s LOLcat

Long before LOLcat was demanding cheezburgerz and stealin' ur goods, a 1960s feline named "Etti-cat" prowled the earth.

Etti-Cat was a feline Emily Post, created by children's author, Jo Mary McCormick, to teach manners to the younger set. Much like today's LOLcat he was also popular with adults. What's not to love?

        Australian Firemen Rescue Flushed Kitten

When Australian three-year-old Alannah Merleto flushed a two day old kitten down the toilet firefighters came to the rescue.
The crew found the kitten by putting a camera down the pipe, and pushed the kitten to an access valve. The eight firefighters worked for five hours to free the kitten. The kitten was reunited with his mother Pusska and was renamed Cain after the firefighter who pulled him from the drain.

        Kitten and Caboodle

Craig Grant built a miniature village on 30 acres for more than 600 cats! Caboodle Ranch in Florida features shelters fashioned after small town buildings, nature trails, and underground dens.

        Chairman Meow

Looks a bit like my cat. I wonder if Joyce is a commie... not that there's anything wrong with that.
