An eagle, a fox and my cat all getting along fine on my porch

This wonderful video was taken in Unalaska, Alaska in the Aleutian Islands. I would love to see these guys in my back yard and would definitely invite that fox in for a cup of tea.

Lil' Drac the Orphan Fruit Bat

Lil' Drac is an orphan short-tailed fruit bat hand-raised by Bat World Sanctuary.

After I watched this I wondered what happened to this adorable little guy. When I searched I found Part 2 of the Lil' Drac story. Yay!

Elk Crossing

This turn-off from Banff, Alberta to the #1 highway has always been a crossing place for elk. When the highway was built they continued to cross but there were many animal fatalities. The solution? Parks Canada puts up fencing to keep them off the highway. They also build overpasses for the elks but these animals weren't willing to wait for a dedicated elk lane to appear. They are using an existing train bridge to access a meadow on the other side. I wonder what happens when a train comes along...

Tiny Royal Antelope

This tiny Royal Antelope calf was born at the San Diego Zoo on February 8^th, weighing just 17 ounces. The smallest of the antelopes, these creatures only measure 10–12 inches high and 9–10 pounds when fully grown.

Photographer Isa Leshko is traveling to sanctuaries across the country to photograph animals that are elderly or at the end stage of their lives. “I began the series as a means of exploring my feelings about my mother’s decline due to Alzheimer’s Disease,” she says. “As I’ve worked on this project, though, I’ve come to realize that these images are a testament to survival and endurance. And they raise questions about what it means to be elderly.”

The Story Behind the Grieving Chimps

On September 23, 2008, Dorothy, a female chimpanzee in her late 40s, died of congestive heart failure. A maternal and beloved figure, Dorothy spent eight years at Cameroon’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, which houses and rehabilitates chimps victimized by habitat loss and the illegal African bushmeat trade.

After a hunter killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a “mascot” to an amusement park in Cameroon. For the next 25 years, she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport. In May 2000, Dorothy—obese from poor diet and lack of exercise—was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. I love Neko Case and I love animals so posting this is a win-win for me.

On tour I spend a lot of time in hotels I always watch TV on the treadmill, and so many times there'd be some horrible animal disaster -- somebody being mauled to death by a tiger or an elephant that rampaged. Those stories are so depressing, and the animal is always the one who gets murdered at the end. I don't know why people act so shocked. You got in the cage with the tiger, you were harassing it and then it f---ing killed you. It's a f---ing tiger. What the f--- were you thinking?"

Oh, but she's not done. "Then they shoot the tiger. That's hardly fair. It's a large predator. Or killer whales in zoos -- those things are supposed to swim 200 miles a day. It's like having a teenager and saying, 'OK, I'm gonna feed and clothe you, but you have to live in this refrigerator.' People say [zoos] are for the children, but why would you want your children to see sad, crazy animals?"

If you think Case doesn't have a similar soft spot for domesticated animals, until February 3 her record label will donate $5 to Best Friends Animal Society every time a blogger posts 'Nerve.'
