Hilaire Belloc's Cautionary Tales for Children

Cautionary tales are ubiquitous in popular culture; many urban legends are framed as cautionary tales: from the lover's lane haunted by a hook-handed murderer to the tale of a man who shot a cactus for fun only to die when the plant toppled onto him. Like horror fiction generally, the cautionary tale exhibits an ambivalent attitude towards social taboos. The narrator of a cautionary tale is momentarily excused from the ordinary demands of etiquette that discourages the use of gruesome or disgusting imagery because the tale serves to reinforce some other social taboo.

Vintage travel books

Places I Have Never Been:
The inner pages are all text with stamp like color photos pasted in. The books are from the 'Around the World Program' by the 'American Geographical Society'.
The program was written from 1955 to 1973 and was subscription based. It looks like about 68 books were produced and 6 were rereleased in the early 90's.

Pimp My Queen

Baby Nag saw HRH on the news last night and commented, "The Queen dresses like a pimp." I'm not sure that's the image she intended to project but the youth has nailed it.

Bonni Reid

Twenty-four years later

On Dec. 3, 1984, a tank inside the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal released 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas, killing at least 3000 people. More than 500,000 people were declared to be affected by the gas and awarded an average of $550 in compensation.

Hundreds of tons of waste still languish on the old grounds of the Union Carbide pesticide factory in Bhopal, India, nearly a quarter-century after a poison gas leak killed thousands and turned this ancient city into a notorious symbol of industrial disaster.
