Surge in record sales as Catholics finally discover the Beatles

VATICAN CITY–The Vatican's newspaper has finally forgiven John Lennon for declaring that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, calling the remark a 'boast' by a young man grappling with sudden fame.

Perhaps the Pope was an underground fan in their Frankfurt days?

Pistol Packing Monk

I thought this was a joke when Blort posted it. Next thing you know Sarah Palin will be lobbying to become the patron saint of polar bear gutters.
The St. Gabriel Possenti Society promotes his recognition as Patron Saint of Handgunners. In 1860, a band of soldiers entered the mountain village of Isola, Italy. They began to burn and pillage the town. Possenti, with his seminary rector's permission, walked into the center of town, unarmed, to face the terrorists. One of the soldiers was dragging off a young woman he intended to rape when he saw Possenti and made a snickering remark about such a young monk being all alone. Possenti grabbed the soldier's revolver from his belt and ordered the marauder to release the woman. The startled soldier complied, as Possenti grabbed the revolver of another soldier who came by. The rest of the soldiers came running, determined to overcome the rebellious monk. At that moment a small lizard ran across the road between Possenti and the soldiers. When the lizard briefly paused, Possenti took careful aim and struck the lizard with one shot. Turning his two handguns on the approaching soldiers, Possenti commanded them to drop their weapons. Having seen his handiwork with a pistol, the soldiers complied. Possenti marched the whole lot out of town, ordering them never to return. The grateful townspeople escorted Possenti in triumphant procession back to the seminary, thereafter referring to him as 'The saviour of Isola".

The Mark Rothko Chapel

The Mark Rothko Chapel has two vocations: contemplation and action. It is a place alive with religious ceremonies of all faiths, and where the experience and understanding of all traditions are encouraged and made available. Action takes the form of supporting human rights, and thus the Chapel has become a rallying place for all people concerned with peace, freedom, and social justice throughout the world.

Read Jonathan Jones article on Mark Rothko's final, misunderstood masterpiece - a haunting chapel the artist never lived to see.

Sister Italia

Priest Antonio Rungi wants beauty contest - for nuns

An Italian Catholic priest is launching a beauty contest with a difference - it will open only to nuns.
Father Antonio Rungi, from Mondragone in the province of Caserta, near Naples, said he expected at least a thousand nuns to enter the "Sister Italia" contest. It would at first run online, but he hoped it would then become a "real pageant" on the lines of the annual Miss Italy contest, complete with a parade and interviews.Father Rungi, a moral theologian who has his own blog

Kill Two Birds With One Stone

Having trouble finding time to give Him the proper praise He deserves? Mashup your workout and worship into one easy Praise Up.

Gospel Aerobics with Paul Eugene
It's bloody long. I got tired of praising after about 20 seconds.

Ne dites pas ça, c'est sacré!!

The latest dance craze from my hometown makes me mildly uncomfortable. The use of names of sacred objects as profanity (calice, ciboire, tabarnak, etc.) is, I think, peculiar to Quebec. I still cringe a little when I hear these words uttered outside of catechism class or church.

Recycle or go to Hell

Looks like today is sin day chez Nag:
Failing to recycle plastic bags could find you spending eternity in Hell, the Vatican said after drawing up a list of seven deadly sins for our times.

The seven, which include polluting the environment, were announced by Monsignor Gianfranco Girotti, a close ally of the Pope and the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, one of the Roman Curia's main court.

Recycling could save your soul from eternal damnation
Polluting the environment by failing to recycle is one of the new seven deadly sins.

Adding the accumulation of obscene wealth to this list is particularly galling when one considers the obscene wealth of the Vatican and the Catholic Church. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black...

Oh God

Church strips saucy sign:
The sign in front of Heart Lake United Church on Sandalwood Parkway East usually has inspirational messages on it, according to resident Nicole Cedrone.

So she did a double take when she saw the most recent message: 'Lying in bed shouting Oh God doesn't constitute going to church.'

Deep fried body of Christ - yum

National Public Radio skit blasphemes Eucharist, apology made

The offensive segment was part of a show called “Fair Game with Faith Salie,” broadcast on Utah National Public radio station KCPW.

In the skit, a woman’s voice announces a “Huckabee family recipe” supposedly leaked by his opponents.

A man’s voice then says:
“Tired of bland unsatisfying Eucharists? Try this Huckabee family favorite. Deep-Fried Body of Christ--boring holy wafers no more. Take one Eucharist. Preferably post transubstantiation. Deep-fry in fat, not vegetable oil, ladies, until crispy. Serve piping hot. Mike likes to top his Christ with whipped cream and sprinkles. But his wife Janet and the boys like theirs with heavy gravy and cream puffs. It goes great with red wine.”

The woman’s voice responds: “Now that is just ridiculous. Everyone knows evangelicals don’t believe in transubstantiation.”

Being an irreverent blasphemer myself, I laughed so hard at this that I nearly choked on my breakfast of Crispy Christ Cereal.

Apatheism: The Church Of I Don't Give A Damn

Why convert to Apatheism?
1. It's easy! Apatheists don't need to worry about various daily issues such as whether this or that is a sin, what will happen when I die, can I ask God for a Mercedes-Benz, etc. Apatheists enjoy life and find time to come up with their own personal values.
2. It's natural! Apatheism is so basic, even non-human animals and plants practice it. "Observe how the lilies of the field grow, they do not toil nor do they spin." That's because they do not care, either.
3. It's honest! Think about it -- if most people really believed in the god(s) they pretend to worship, they wouldn't act the ways they do. That's because they aren't really that interested. They're lying to themselves about their beliefs, or hedging their bets in the nearest, most popular religion "just in case." Apatheists, on the other hand, are completely aware that their religion won't do a damn thing for them.
