Mechanical Flipbook Art and Kit

Flipbookit is a Kickstarter project by kinetic artists, Mark Rosen and Wendy Marvel and inventor and manufacturing designer Steven Goldstein.

The Mechanical flip books were a big hit at 2012 Maker Faire. Now you can build your own hand-cranked flip book at home using your own images.

Einstein's Office

This is what Einstein's office looked like on the day he died.
"The empty chair by the formula-filled blackboard," LIFE wrote, "looked as if the scholar who usually sat in it had merely stepped away, perhaps to gaze reflectively at the meadow which rolls past the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study. But the chair would not again be filled."
The photo was taken by Ralph Morse for Life magazine. Read more.

Nudie's Rodeo Tailors

When I was a very young Nag I had a giant country crush on Gram Parsons. One of the things I liked about him was his over-the-top suit embellished with amphetamines, marijuana leaves and naked women.  He was one of the country elite  (including Porter Wagoner, Hank Snow, Roy Rogers and Hank Williams) who wore "Nudie Suits".
Nudie Cohn was the first to mix Nashville and Hollywood, making it hip to be ostentatious and his life was as wild as his suits.

Red, White, and You

Todd Levin of The Morning News  offers a handy guide to choosing wines. Among the useful tips:

Avoid bottles sporting any of these on the label:
  • Typos, particularly in the spelling of “wine”
  • Any cartoon likeness of a shark, monkey, Dracula wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses, or a drunk Frenchman urinating into a wooden barrel
  • Endorsements like “From the creators of Robocop”
  • Scratch-and-sniff technology
  • Instructions to “Shake Well” or “Keep Away From Eyes, Skin, and Magnets”
  • Claims such as “No Trans Fats” or “Contains 30% Real Wine”
  • A vintage date that is a year in the future

Now you know. You're welcome.

The 20 room TuboHotel in Tepoztlan, Mexico is constructed from recycled concrete tubing. It was designed by T3arc.
I'm not sure I'd enjoy sleeping so close to my neighbours but with tubo-rates as low as $300 pesos it might appeal to backpackers.

Hermès’s Only American Designer

When I think about designers for one of the world's top luxury goods manufacturers the image of a guy behind the desk at the Waco Post Office is not the first that comes to mind.  Kermit Oliver is a Texas postal worker. He is also an artist and the only American designer for Hermès silk factory. Below are two of his scarf designs for the famous French fashion house.

Maze Maker Finds Few Wanting to Solve It

It will take cartoonist Joe Wos about 100 hours to draw this 35-foot-long, 4-foot-wide maze and will take about 30-40 hours to solve it. The goal? To make it into Guinness World Records.
Guinness accepted Mr. Wos's proposal on condition that it be 10 square meters, or 107.6 square feet, drawn by him alone, with witnesses—five people are witnessing and signing off at regular intervals—and that it be solvable (by someone else).
Most people he approached were not interested in taking on the onerous task of solving it. Finally Mandi Bridgeman of ToonSeum agreed to do it. Since Wos is only 99.4% sure it can be solved there is a slim chance that Mandi may regret her decision.

4 Leonard Cohen Films on the Occasion of His 78th Birthday

As Cohen celebrates his 78th birthday today, check out these 4 films that hark back to days when the singer was still chiefly a poet, and all the rest – Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Order of Canada and those 200 cover versions of “Hallelujah” – still a twinkle in his ink pot at NFB.ca blog

Sophie Calle : Rachel, Monique

I love her work and regret that I won't be able to catch this show.

French artist Sophie Calle's powerful installation, dealing with the death of her mother,in the brut concrete space under the Palais de Tokyo certainly packs a punch. Calle's mother, Monique Sindler, had always wanted to be the subject of her daughter's work, and when, upon learning her mother was on her deathbed the artist decided to set up her camera and film her, Sindler exclaimed "enfin" ("at last").

This professional muralist is reproducing the Sistine Chapel ceiling in his studio apartment in New York City. Why? Because he loves the Old Masters and, after painting for others for so long, he wanted to produce a work of art for himself. Unfortunately he has to vacate the apartment in November. I wonder what the new tenant will think of it.
