Custom 1956 Bentley S1 Ute At Auction In Australia

This classic started life in 1956 as a Bentley S1, purchased by the owner of a large retail chain before changing hands to the Earl of Stradbroke who had it converted to a pickup. The work was carried out in New South Wales, Australia, where they've always been bonkers for utes. They painted it yellow and gave it a woody-style pickup bed.

TheTrinity Grammar School is auctioning this custom vehicle at the Australian Auto Show on June 10 to raise funds to build a new library and are hoping it will fetch $23,600-$34,400US.

In this well-researched piece CONELRAD Adjacent tracks the history of the fallout shelter sign.

Just as it would be difficult to imagine the Cold War without the Berlin Wall or the American-Soviet 'hotline,' it would be equally hard to consider this tumultuous era without the instantly recognizable National Fallout Shelter Sign. Beginning in 1961, this ubiquitous yellow and black sign with inverted triangular shapes began showing up on and in structures across the United States. The purpose of the sign was to alert the citizenry that space had been identified by the government for public shelter in the event of a nuclear attack.[ii]

Walk around any major American city today and you will still be able to see at least a few rusty Fallout Shelter Signs attached to buildings of a certain vintage.[iii] These distinctive metallic, reflective signs remain the most durable—literally and figuratively—symbol of the Cold War. But how did the sign come to be and who exactly was responsible for its creation?

Le Voyage Dans La Lune

A Trip to the Moon (Le Voyage dans la lune) is a 1902 French black-and-white silent science fiction film. I first saw it a number of years ago at an excellent exhibition at The Museum of Civilization in Quebec City that drew parallels between Moscow and Quebec City at the turn of the last century. I can't remember in what context this film was shown but it was weird enough to capture my attention.

It is based loosely on two popular novels of the time: From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne and The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells.

The film was written and directed by Georges Méliès.  It was extremely popular at the time of its release and is the best-known of the hundreds of fantasy films made by Méliès. A Trip to the Moon is the first science fiction film, and uses innovative animation and special effects, including the well-known image of the spaceship landing in the moon’s eye.”

Who is Bernard Herrmann? You may not recognize his name but you probably know his music.

Herrmann wrote film scores—most notably, nine for Alfred Hitchcock, including Vertigo, North by Northwest, and The Man Who Knew Too Much. But despite his music’s indirect fame, Herrmann (whose centenary is June 29) has yet to get his due as a serious composer. And he was one.

How Feather Extensions Are Changing the Way Chickens Live (and Die)

Would people wear these feathers in their hair if they knew the birds were euthanized in order to harvest them and that the meat was fed to hogs or thrown away? Probably.

"Almost 30 years ago, Tom Whiting got some eggs from Henry Hoffman, a chicken farmer and breeder in Oregon, who had been raising 2,500 chickens in his backyard. Hoffman was a fly fisherman who was breeding the birds for their feathers—the long, skinny, variegated feathers that fishermen use for tying into flies.
Now, Whiting has apparently become something of an unwitting feather king. Steven Tyler and Miley Cyrus have snatched up his feathers, which are now retailing for hundreds of dollars more than their suggested price, mostly because of growing demand from hair salons and pet groomers."

A court in Taiwan this week ruled against a female food-blogger who said a local restaurant's beef noodles 'were too salty,' and that she'd seen cockroaches scurrying around in the restaurant. She gets 30 days in detention, two years of probation, and must pay 200,000 Taiwanese dollars (about $7K US dollars) in compensation to the restaurant. The court didn't argue she was lying about the bugs, but ruled that 'Ms. Liu should not have criticized all the restaurant's food as too salty because she only had one dish on her single visit.'

Is Apple Ethically Challenged?

I have many Apple products and I love them but I have a bone to pick with the company. When I purchased my iPad I had to upgrade my MacBook to a new operating system while PC users were not required to upgrade. Doesn't it seem wrong to gouge loyal customers?
‘Hungry Beast’ TV Series investigated the work ethics of the world’s biggest tech company and found them lacking. The ethical questions raised in this video are far more serious than my mini beef.
