Hate that we lost Joe ( J. Mellor, Woody etc) so soon. London Calling is my all time go-to for time sensitive or dog-tired need-to-focus road trip soundtrack. Just ran through Sandinista!. to me, it holds up well. Certainly reflecting onto my life recollections at time of that triple LP release. beyond the melodies & vocal performances, .those 5 discs' lyrics are a literate exploration of culture & 20th c history- not wearing a USA centric viewpoint. Topics that intrigued the group songwriters. & my fave era of The Only Band That Matters Still heady stuff. In these recent years, I find Joe's post Clash work holds up better than Mick's B.A.D. etc stuff. Even unearthed the worthwhile Sandinista! adjacent LP by Ellen Foley- Spirit of St Louis. Clash as her backing band from time she & Mick were an item.

ReplyDeleteI like his work with The Mescaleros. Redemption Song is a particular favourite of mine.
