El Bulli 2006 reports

Ever been curious about what it would be like to dine at El Bulli? It was my plan to visit Catalonia and the South of France this year and to eat at El Bulli - still hope to do so but went to Paris in May and am planning to drive out to the east coast at the end of August so the Spain/France expedition will likely be postponed for a bit. Anyhow this photographic report gives me a good idea of what a meal at this restaurant would be like.

The Confusion Era

The Confusion Era:
Art and Culture of Japan During the Allied Occupation, 1945-1952

Imatake Shichiro, "Let's All Make a Bright Future for Japan: Sumitomo Bank," fall 1945. Offset print, 67 x 48 cm.
Some posters appearing in the first months after the war combined commercial advertising and public service announcements. In this poster, designed by Imatake Shichiro (born 1905) for the Sumitomo Bank, the poignant image of peace doves speaks to an issue clearly prominent on survivors' minds-- peace. Imatake was a leader of the modernist movement in graphic design as well as being a noted painter.

The Middle East Buddy List

Confused? Slate's Middle East Buddy List breaks down the relationships between the countries, terrorist organizations, and political factions who are fighting it out in the current conflict. Who likes whom? Who are the bitterest of enemies? And which groups don't really know where they stand?

Check out my buddy's photos . They're great.

Hot Enough For Ya?

I'm sitting here encased in a layer of sweaty grease - is it possible that my body is producing this as some sort of defence mechanism against the heat or is this just something that happens as one gets older? Our old house is uninsulated and we've been advised against central air as it wouldn't cool off the upper level. We have two tiny window air conditioners that cannot begin to cool 2500 square feet.
Hell could not possibly be any hotter. That's a relief as I suspect I'm facing an eternity there.

dental denial (n)
To use mouthwash instead of brushing one's teeth before going out for lack of time or total laziness.
