Frederic Edwin Church traveled from New York City to Newfoundland in 1859 to study icebergs in their natural surroundings. He sketched a stack of studies, taking a small boat to get close enough to capture the play of light on the mountains of ice. He used them to create a huge painting in his New York studio.
The Icebergs measured 5.4 feet by 9.4 feet.
