The Return Of The Giant Tortoises

One hundred and eighty years after being declared extinct 158 captive-bred giant tortoises have been reintroduced to the Galapagos Islands. This video shows them taking their first steps on their native Floreana Island.

A micro-colony of these tortoises who were proven to share genetic ancestry with the Floreana tortoises were found living at Volcán Wolf (Wolf Volcano) on nearby Isabela Island. It appears that whalers had “stored” them where they could find them, but never came back for them.
