Painting Of The Day

'Girl with a Kitten' is one of eight portraits that Lucian Freud made of his first wife, Kathleen Garman, between 1947 and 1951.

“The forensic intensity of 'Girl with a Kitten', and especially the manner in which Garman dominates the frame alongside the challenging direct eye contact from the young cat, might stem from Freud’s approach to his sitters at this time: ‘I would sit very close and stare. It could be uncomfortable for both of us’ he admitted. The portrait of Kitty (with a kitten) encapsulates the way that Freud looked to embody character, rather than just illustrate likeness.” - TATE
