You used to be able to get salami with whole peppercorns inside it that your teeth would crack into at random. So good. That was pepper salami, but also there was a thing called peppered salami that had a nearly solid layer of coarse-ground black pepper pressed into the outside of it. In the early 1980s I'd get off work and sometimes buy like a half-pound one and eat it whole in the car on the way home. It was a bit expensive, but totally worth it. They don't have whole salamis hanging out in an aisle of the grocery store the way they used to. It'd probably be fifty dollars now.
