| The towers of Medieval Bologna as imagined by modern engraver Toni Pecoraro |
Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Bologna had as many as 100 defensive stone towers that were as densely packed as Manhattan skyscrapers with some reaching up to 97 meters. In the 13th century, many towers were taken down or demolished, and others simply collapsed. Today, fewer than twenty towers survive including
The Two Towers which are a landmark of the city.
