For 7500 residents of 12 villages in Eastern Ontario, July 1, 1958 wasn't just Canada's 91st birthday, it was Inundation Day.
The construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway began in 1954 and is one of the most monumental engineering and construction achievements in history. To enable its construction more than 6,500 residents were relocated from their villages as they watched their homes flooded and submerged under the St. Lawrence River.
