In 1961, 23-year-old Michael C. Rockefeller made two trips to New Guinea where he met with Asmat elders and artists, purchasing and collecting their woodwork. During his second visit he went missing and is now presumed to have drowned, although many rumours about his disappearance circulated at the time. Many of the Asmat artifacts Rockefeller collected are part of the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
