Tokyo”s Subterranean World

Image: Japan Tours

Fifty metres under Tokyo lies an underground system of tunnels, water tanks, massive chambers and pillars constructed to withstand 200 tonnes of water per second. Tokyo is vulnerable to river overflows during heavy rain and typhoon seasons. When flooding is expected, these chambers can pump the water away from the city and into the nearby river, reducing the risk of catastrophic flooding.
