“FlyWire,” a Princeton-led team of scientists and citizen scientists, has made a massive step toward understanding the human brain by building a neuron-by-neuron and synapse-by-synapse roadmap through the brain of an adult fruit fly.
Fully mapping a human brain of roughly 86 billion neurons is likely still many years in the future but this project brings us a step closer to better understanding brain diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
