Today's post at Ian Visits focused on Albion Square Gardens (image above) in East London. The photos are lovely but what interested me was this:
Albion Hall was demolished in 1944 after being damaged during WWII. The two detached houses that stand on the western side of the gardens and look traditionally Victorian are in fact 1980s developments.
I took a walk around the square on Google Maps and could not identify which homes were the newer builds. That is because England recognizes the importance and role of the historic environment in the neighbourhood planning process. I live in the historic district of a small town and maintaining views and streetscapes is a constant struggle.
