Sport was a signature theme in the work of USSR social realist artist, Alexander Deineka, who celebrated the labourers and soldiers of the Soviet Union. Deineka was also an athlete and he promoted fizkultura, or physical culture, through propagandistic posters, paintings, sculptures, and films. One 1933 poster urged Soviet citizens to “work, build, and not whine” and to take part in sport.
