RIP Magawa the Hero Rat

Magawa, an African giant pouched rat, was born in Tanzania in 2013. As part of the “HeroRAT” initiative he was trained to detect landmines and tuberculosis in Cambodia and found more than 100 landmines and other pieces of unexploded ordnance over the course of his career. His courage and devotion to duty were rewarded with a gold medal from the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals. Magawa was the first rodent recipient of the honour.
