Earlier this year pictures of stray blue dogs in the city of Dzerzhinsk, Russia went viral. It was widely reported that the discolouration was caused by the animals rolling in chemicals at an abandoned factory.
Snopes investigated and found no evidence showing that the dogs’ coats turned blue as a result of chemical exposure, or whether it was the result of a prank gone awry.
But the story had a happy ending as animal rights activists were able to find new homes for the Smurf dogs.
