Cuban photographer Alberto Korda took this photo in 1959 in Sumidero, Pinar del Río Province, Cuba. This little girl hugged the only doll she'd ever known, a piece of wood rescued from the garbage and wearing a scrap of paper as a dress.
“This girl who was hugging a log that she called my baby, convinced me that I should dedicate my work to a revolution that would transform those inequalities.”said Korda.
The girl's name was Paula María Seijo Beade who would become a nurse and die of leukemia while still very young.
