16th century optical illusion

This 16th century optical illusion may be the oldest ever. It appears in 'The Ambassadors', painted by Hans Holbein the Younger in 1533, which memorialises Jean de Dinteville, French ambassador to England, and his friend, Georges de Selve.  It is only visible when viewed from the right.
