Thimmamma Marrimanu is the world's largest banyan tree, covering more than 5 acres of land. According to legend it was created in 1434 when an Indian widow named Thimmamma committed sati, an ancient Hindu practice. The massive banyan tree is said to have grown from a pole of the funeral pyre of her husband on which the woman immolated herself.
