Outsider Artist Coloured Her World
Afia Zecharia, passed away in Schlomi, Israel in 2002 at the age of 80. During her youth in Yemen she used to paint on the walls of affluent houses. In 1950 she immigrated to Israel with her jeweler husband and their six children, where they settled in a house in the ruins of the Palestinian village. Zecharia wanted to paint on the walls of their house, but her husband forbade it. When he passed away she was moved to a housing project and she began to paint again, covering the plain white walls with Yemenite embroidery motifs. Since her death, the project apartment with its elaborate painted patterns has attracted hundreds of visitors every year.
