Barbadian singer Jackie “Manface” Opel was famous for creating spouge, a fusion of ska and calypso styles that was very popular in the mid-1960s. The cowbell and the guitar are integral to the instrumentation, reflecting the African origin of much of Barbadian music. He died at the age of 32 in a car accident on March 9, 1971.
