In 2016, South Australia experienced a near total blackout after an apocalyptic storm. In its aftermath Elon Musk’s Tesla installed the world's biggest lithium-ion battery to help reduce the risk of blackouts as the country moved to renewable power generation. Two years on, the Tesla-sponsored Hornsdale Power Reserve has saved A$116 million, proving that batteries can physically help the grid and make money along the way.
