Hiding In Plain Sight In Switzerland

Maps produced by the Swiss Federal Office of Topography (Swisstopo) undergo a rigorous proofreading process to ensure accuracy. For decades cartographers at that office have attempted to outsmart that process by inserting barely visible illicit drawings onto official maps.

Some of the rogue mapmakers inserted their drawings just before their retirement to avoid being fired from the agency. A spider, a man’s face, a naked woman, a hiker, a fish, and a marmot are some of the images that have been inserted over the years.
