Ornate box turtles co-evolved with wild bison on the vast prairies until European settlers plowed the grasslands. Now they’re considered threatened in Iowa. Rooster, Jenny Wren, Mink and Jaybird are pups with an important job: tracking down rare box turtles to help conservationists keep them safe. When the dogs find a turtle, they pick it up and bring it back to be counted.
The Bur Oak Land Trust hopes to restore this site to what it looked like pre- settlement – a sunny, open grassland dotted with oak trees, and periodically burned by prairie fires.
