View this post on Instagram Supermassive Black Hole Pancake Art . . On Wednesday April 10 2019, astronomers released the very first photographic image of a black hole. The picture displays the black hole at the center of the M83 galaxy. It is more than 3 million times the diameter of the Earth, more massive than the orbit of Pluto, and with 6.5 billion times more mass than our sun, its gravity consumes everything around it - even light. . . This photo further confirms the predictions made by Einstein in his theory of general relativity, and agrees with many of the visual speculations made by Hollywood films such as Interstellar. . . Scientists linked 8 telescopes around the world to make this image possible, giving this telescope array the awesome name "The Event Horizon Telescope". The Event Horizon of a black hole is the spot at which light can no longer escape it's pull, where there is no going back. . . We've done some amazing stuff as humans! Here's a flat dumb pancake to celebrate that! . . . #blackhole #m83 #astronomy #astrophysics #einstein #eventhorizon #space #cosmos #oldgods #whoa #nasa A post shared by Dancakes (@drdancake) on Apr 10, 2019 at 1:23pm PDT
