This Fencing Has Led A Double Life
There are neighbourhoods in London with black painted fences made of steel and mesh. They don't look remarkable and people walk by them without a second glance but these fences actually have a fascinating story. In a previous life they were stretchers that were used to carry casualties during the Second World War. 600,000 were made to be used across England during the height of the Blitz.
‘The stretchers are a very tangible link to the people of London who lived through this dark episode of history,’ says historian Mary-Ann Ochota. There is now a society that is dedicated to the preservation of the stretcher railings.
