On July 4, 1916 sisters Augusta and Adeline Van Buren set out from Sheepshead Bay in New York City to begin a transcontinental journey. They arrived in Los Angeles on September 8th after traveling 5,500 miles over hazardous roads.They were the first women to do so on solo motorcycles. They braved bad roads, rough weather, mechanical difficulties and small-town municipalities where they were threatened with arrest for wearing trousers.
