In 1899 the Canadian Pacific Railway engaged two Swiss guides at their mountain hotels to safely escort clients to surrounding summits and ensure their safe return. Their popularity was such that more guides were added and their chalet village, Edelweiss, in Golden, BC still stands as a reminder of those early years. In the 55 years they taught thousands to ascend mountains safely, no one was seriously injured while climbing under their supervision. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise revived the tradition in 1997.
