How Plants Defend Themselves Against Threats

Because plants are stationary and cannot escape herbivory, they must respond with chemical defenses to deter herbivores and repair damaged tissue. Scientists used fluorescent light to visualize alarm signals within plants that illustrate how they are able to mobilize their defenses.
