Banksy has created a mural in New York City with fellow street artist Borf to protest the imprisonment of Zehra Doğan a Turkish-Kurdish artist and journalist who is accused of alleged ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). In 2016, after painting an image of the destruction of the Kurdish-majority city of Nusaybin by Turkish government forces, Doğan was imprisoned. She was accused of illegal “organization membership,” and “propaganda for the organization” and sentenced to two years, nine months, and 22 days in prison.
