In August 1930, American painter Grant Wood was in Eldon, Iowa and noticed the Dibble House, a small white house built in the Carpenter Gothic architectural style. He decided to paint it along with the kind of people he imagined living there. The models he chose were his sister Nan and Wood’s dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby.
The familiar image has become one of the widely parodied in American popular culture.
