This Keith Haring Mural Was Never Meant to Last

American artist and social activist Keith Haring knew that his murals—close to 50 in total, scattered across the globe—were subject to impermanence. We the Youth, a collaborative mural the American artist created in Philadelphia in September, 1987 was always meant to be temporary. It was placed on a wall facing a vacant lot in a low-income area of South Philadelphia where it was meant to kickstart community, economic, and social development.

Few of Haring's outdoor murals have survived and Haring himself did not survive the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. However We the Youth has become a permanent placeholder for a house that will, apparently, never be built, and its original message of community improvement has been lost over the years.
