During the uprising against the Communist invaders of Czechoslovakia in 1968, George Golias was forced to flee his country as a refugee, leaving behind a wife, a daughter, his parents and seven siblings.

Jay Irving explores George's 37 years in Canada, working the graveyard shift at a Toronto diner. Isolated from the family he left behind and the country he loves, George wrestles with returning to his homeland and finally facing his past.
