R.I.P.Gerard
Gerard Vlemmings, known to many as The Presurfer, started blogging in September 24, 2000. I started following his blog in 2002 and it led me to wonderful things on the web that I never would have found on my own. It also inspired me to start my own blog in 2005. One of the first people to link to my little blog was Gerard and I felt so important! He was my first and most loyal follower. Since then he has referred many people to my blog and for that I am grateful. I am sorry to tell you that Gerard passed away after a short illness on Saturday at the age of 67. Although we never met I feel that I have lost a friend and I will miss him very much.

More than once I've wept at news of the passing of an "internet" friend.
ReplyDeleteFriends are friends. Period.
It sounds like you had a lovely connection.

i'll miss him too, already do. now looking for a blog to get my fix & yours seems similar. plus i seem to recall you being made mention of on his blog or could've been i saw you in comments. anyway, your blog seems familiar. hope its okay if i follow. my account is private & i rarely comment but do like to read interesting stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteOf course I would be delighted to have you check in on my blog when you can. Any friend of Gerard's is a friend of mine.
ReplyDeleteI followed Kevin's blog "Nothing To Do With Arbroath," and he recently passed away. That was just a couple of months ago. I also followed Gerard's blog and have been waiting — and dreading — update number three. I was stunned to read your post Nag, and sad like you are. It's weird: We feel to miss these people we've not met and who know zip about us, but we do — those of us with working "hearts," anyway. Thanks for letting us know.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for all your posts. I always visit you, too. I'm from Vancouver. I love your hometown.
Best wishes, Chris.
Glad to meet you Chris although I wish it could be under more positive circumstances. It is so sad to lose two people who we looked in on every day.
ReplyDeleteThank you for delivering this sad news and what a fine tribute. He's to be proud of the curiosity that he's inspired. We all cherish one another.
ReplyDeleteAll the best - Johan
So very sad . I've enjoyed Kevin's site and Gerard's for several years . Life is a lot less fun without these guys around .
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update and of course thank you for all the wonderful posts that you entertain us with !

Thank you for sharing this sad news. I loved his blog and I will the person behind it. I just want to yell an expletive right now.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind words Jimbo. Both Gerard and Kev left a mark on so many and I believe they knew how much they meant to us.
ReplyDeleteJames, I really thought he would beat this thing back. He was way too young and vital to leave us so soon.
ReplyDeletePresurfer is how I found you
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm glad you did.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this news about Gerard. I followed his blog for years before he retired and devoted even more time to it. Long live The Presurfer!
ReplyDeleteThe Presurfer was a part of my daily routine for so many years. I'll feel like there's something missing for the next while.
ReplyDeleteThank You everybody. As a close familymember it's heartwarming to see You all care about Gerard. Today was his funeral. Thank you Nag for your kind words.
ReplyDeleteGreetings, Yvonne Vlemmings (Gerards niece. My father is Gerards younger brother)
Please accept my sincere condolences Yvonne. Gerard will hold a fond place in my memories.
ReplyDeleteVery sad notice.
ReplyDeleteI followed him for the last 10 years.
