The History of the Troll Doll


Do you remember the troll doll fad of the early 60s? I had a clutch of these hideous little toys. They were created by Danish woodworker Thomas Dam who was struggling to provide financially for his family. Then, inspired by local lore of certain magical forest creatures, Dam presented his daughter with the world’s first troll doll. The original 1959 troll doll was carved from wood and had glass eyes and woolen hair. His daughter’s friends wanted one of their own so Thomas set up shop in a shed in his backyard and sold his troll dolls at local fun fairs and toy stores. Demand quickly outstripped supply and a factory was built to mass produce vinyl troll dolls.

On April 11, 2013, DreamWorks Animation announced that they had purchased the Troll doll brand from the Dam company. Here is a trailer for Trolls, the film:
