Scarlet macaws flying, cuddling and playing at the Hatched to Fly Free rehabilitation and release aviary in Costa Rica.
The Macaw species native to Costa Rica are Ara macao and Ara ambiguus. Both species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and poaching for the illegal pet trade. Today numbers are fewer than 400 individuals for the Ara ambiguus or Great Green Macaw, and less than 4000 for the Scarlet Macaw.
