Elephants Dressed To The Nines For Festival In India

In 2013, photographer Charles Fréger travelled to India to snap photos of elephants and found some  dressed up to the nines at an annual festival in Jaipur, Rajasthan. They were painted and bejewelled in bright colours, earrings, bells and their tusks were decorated with rings.

The festival is a chance for the animals to take a day off from carrying tourists up to the Amber Palace, a 12-mile round trip from Jaipur. There are around 80 elephants trained to carry tourists to this palace, with as many as 900 visitors taking rides in a single day. Though most elephants are protected by ride limits put in place by the Jaipur government and finish their quota for the day before 11am.
