The year long reign of terror of a rogue owl that has terrorised residents of Purmerend has come to an end. Citizens of the northern Dutch city were forced to arm themselves with umbrellas at night when the aggressive European eagle owl launched more than 50 attacks on humans leaving them bloody and bruised.
A falconer trapped the bird and it is being kept in a temporary facility awaiting a transfer to a permanent home.
The European eagle owl is one of the largest owl species, with a wingspan of up to 1.8 metres (almost six feet) and weighing up to 3kg.
