R.I.P. Parliament Hill’s ‘Catman’

“He was there every day. He was there the day his wife died. On the 9/11 lockdown, he was about the only civilian let on the Hill. He was so well known and the cats were so well known they made an exception for him to get up there.”

Rene Chartrand, the “Catman of Parliament Hill,” died Sunday in a Gatineau hospital. He was 92.

Chartand tended the cat colony for 21 years until 2008, when poor health kept him from his daily visits.

In 2009 I posted about the colony.

  1. What an amazingly compassionate man. I'm sure his love of the cats was returned tenfold.
So wonderful that the 'capture, neuter & release' program worked so well that there are no strays left there. So wonderful it happened after the 'Catman' didn't know.

  2. There were a lot of resources available to wind up the colony because of its location.
