Leon Gimpel And The Parisian Street Kids

In 1915 war was raging across Europe. French photographer Leon Gimpel befriended a group of children who spent their time playing war games on Rue de Grenata in Paris. Under Gimpel's guidance they built wooden rifles, bayonets, tanks and even an aeroplanetanks and aircraft. Every Sunday, Gimpel arrived with his new colour camera, posed the children in military tableaux and photographed them.

Gimpel's photos of the children are on display until 31 August at Église des Frères Prêcheurs, Quai Marx Dormoy, 13200 Arles, France. Event website.
