Atomic Cake Brouhaha


On Tuesday evening, November 5, 1946 an event was held to mark the disbanding of Joint Army-Navy Task Force Number One, the body that organized and oversaw the first post-war atomic tests in the Pacific which had displaced an entire indigenous population of islanders. The centrepiece of the event was an elaborately engineered “mushroom cloud”-topped cake.
When a photo of the commander of the Task Force,Vice Admiral William H.P. Blandy, his wife and Rear Admiral Frank J. Lowry posed with the cake was published in the Washington Post’s society column it unleashed a storm of controversy around the world.
