Spitbank Fort was built in in 1878 to defend Portsmouth Harbour in Britain. The fort was used sporadically until it suffered considerable damage in the air offensive of the Second World War. It was de-activated at the end of WWII and decommissioned in 1956 when coastal artillery was abolished but was sold by the Ministry of Defence in 1982. It is now privately owned and has been transformed into a unique luxury vacation venue.
