Frequent contributor Bruce sent me this photo of New York Fire Department recruits performing calisthenics on Jan. 3, 1937.
A few days before, on New Year’s Eve, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia issued a few admonishments: “Liquor and fire do not mix,” he said. “Your job is not a sissy’s job,” he said. Also, for their benefit: “The bucket brigade is gone. Firefighting is a science.”
