American Girl in Italy: Behind the Iconic Photo

In 1951 aspiring photographer Ruth Orkin took a photo of Ninalee “Jinx” Allen Craig, an American girl touring Europe on her own. Over the years this iconic photograph has been used as a symbol of harassment of women.Jinx, now 83 years old and living in Toronto, sets the record straight:
“It’s not a symbol of harassment. It’s a symbol of a woman having an absolutely wonderful time! I clutched my shawl to me because that sheaths the body. It was my protection, my shield. I was walking through a sea of men. I was enjoying every minute of it.”
